conventions – Neon Shores http://neonshores.net/ a mess of creativity Wed, 03 Feb 2021 22:52:46 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=5.7 MAGFest 2016 [CON] https://neonshores.net/2016/06/01/magfest-2016-con/ Wed, 01 Jun 2016 03:05:00 +0000 https://neonshores.net/?p=954 A few months ago (lolololol finally getting to this post after PAX East look at us go) something crazy went down – that something crazy was Katsucon one weekend and MAGFest the next weekend in the same hotel. We only went for one day of Katsucon and then we went the whole weekend for MAGFest so we weren’t there for all of both but we can only imagine how the hotel staff felt.

We’ll start with a quick paragraph about Katsucon. We went on Saturday to mainly see people we knew – not to do anything con related. We were kind of thankful that’s what we were doing because it was a madhouse zoo full of people everywhere and we pretty much hung out in the fountain area talking to lots of awesome geeks. We also went down to the giant hall that led to the pool because that was the only place where there weren’t a billion people and we wanted to at least get a couple of photos of our costumes. We’ve had these costumes done forever and we FINALLY GOT TO WEAR THEM. Byakuya Togami & Toko Fukawa from Danganronpa!

Byakuya Togami & Toko Fukawa - Danganronpa

Thanks to Roger for getting these photos (SERIOUSLY THANKS TO ROGER FOR GETTING LIKE ALL THE PHOTOS IN THIS POST)! And also for hurrying and snagging these other goofy-ass photos from the back of a photo machine that did “example” shots of people standing behind the machine. They were only up for a few seconds after they were taken so he would always rush over with the camera and try to take a picture of the screen. SUCCESS!

Byakuya Togami & Toko Fukawa - Danganronpa

That’s really about it for a Katsucon report, haha. Maybe one day we’ll actually go back to the con, but we aren’t sure as of now. We like seeing people we only see once a year though! This year we knew it was a no-go because of how much money it would be for hotel/badges for cons two weekends in a row and MAGFest is our favorite time of year (next to Halloween and Christmas… and MAGFest Classic ;D) so we knew which one we had to stick with in the back-to-back con issue.

SO MAGFEST 2016! We got there mid-afternoon on Thursday and the first thing of note that happened was Nate dropping what was left of a handle of Fireball Whisky (it was leftover from the ADAM drink at the wedding) which shattered on the tile and left the Gaylord National hall smelling like Fireball. I wish I had a dollar for every person who walked by while the staff was cleaning it up (the Katsucon & Gaylord staff who helped out both were amazing <3) and went, “IT SMELLS LIKE FIREBALL.” I could’ve used all those dollars to buy my food for the weekend. A couple hours later we were in the Ninja Sex Party panel, flipping our shit because NINJA SEX PARTY WE WERE IN THE SAME ROOM AS NINJA SEX PARTY OKAY. The panel was hilarious (as expected) and if you wanted to watch it, it is up on YouTube here! Their cover album (Under the Covers, yesssssss) was about to be released shortly after the con so there is some fun talk about that as well as all kinds of other hijinks. Overall, the panel was great and just served to get us super pumped up for the concert that was taking place the next night.

On Friday morning we put on the Saints Row 2 costumes we’ve had done FOREVER, DJ Veteran Child & Shaundi and we were joined by Denis who put together an SR2 Johnny Gat! He didn’t do the frosted tips because FIRST OF ALL, FROSTED TIPS, and second, his hair was already dyed purple even before he was going to join us as Johnny and it looked amazing. His hair fit the Saints perfectly so why not run with it? 😀

Johnny Gat, Shaundi, & DJ Veteran Child - Saints Row 2

Friday was full of playing video games, wandering around the vendor room/artist’s alley, and freaking out over awesome/adorable/perfect art and items and then Friday night was the NINJA SEX PARTY CONCERT AHHHHHHHHHHHH! TWRP joined them (since TWRP played on the cover album and there’s going to be a lot of awesome work between them and NSP in the near future) and we got to see both bands rock the hell out. The concert is up on YouTube too — check it out! It was effing great and as an added bonus, DJ Cutman shared a new remix he did of my favorite NSP song, Samurai Abstinence Patrol after the concert was over. You can listen to the remix here — it is a perfect remix of an already kickass song.

After the concert and more MAGFest madness, our room managed to get more photos of the Five Nights at Freddy’s/Hotline Miami costumes we originally brought to MAGFest Classic last year — we got to use the awesome wifi shutter app for the camera for some of the photos (like the first one below) and it worked out very well. These were taken around 4 in the morning? I’m not sure how that happened but our explanation for stuff like that is always just MAGFEST!

Hotline Miami + Five Nights at Freddy's

Hotline Miami + Five Nights at Freddy's

Saturday was playing more video games (because MAGFest) with Fallout 4 costumes in the morning and Until Dawn costumes with an amazing group in the evening. Fallout 4 is magical and we knew we wanted to make costumes from it but didn’t have the time or budget for anything crazy. We ended up going with Nate and Nora pre-Vault 111 — aka the two characters at the beginning that you can rename and change looks-wise and all that jazz. We also had a little baby Shaun which was a baby doll from the thrift store. It was the least creepy looking baby doll we could find there and it was dressed all in pink so we ended up calling the baby Shaunita all day. We even made the baby a theme song.

Nate & Nora - Fallout 4

We met up with an awesome group of costumed people later who all loved Until Dawn as much as we do and we goofed off with them at a photoshoot and then thanks to Denis we got a couple more shots of us, also goofing off with the danger totem I made. Nate is always on his cell phone so him as Chris and me as Ashley worked out really well.

Until Dawn!

Thanks to Patricia for this photo of the group!

Chris & Ashley - Until Dawn

Roger helped us get photos for a Jacen Solo/Tenel Ka Djo (Star Wars: EU) photo thing we’re working on later that night. We had to time it just right so that there weren’t a bunch of people around the Gaylord National’s main fountain in the atrium, but the lights and water features were still going. We caught it about five minutes before they turned off. Woo! Here is a shot from that evening. The whole photo project should hopefully be online THIS YEAR AT SOME POINT HAHAHAHA. Look, see, I’m being realistic here. 😉

Sunday was more video games. We need to stop writing con posts months later because we forget everything that happens, but HOW DO WE NOT PROCRASTINATE?

PAX East 2015 [CON] https://neonshores.net/2015/05/11/pax-east-2015-con/ Mon, 11 May 2015 23:16:51 +0000 https://neonshores.net/?p=798 Hey, wasn’t PAX East 2 months ago or something? Yes, it was! But the blog had some hiccups and I haven’t had a chance to sit down and write about all the awesome things we saw there since the blog had been fixed – UNTIL NOW. Let me start off with this picture of one of the many awesome indie games we saw! Yes, you are reading the title correctly and yes, it was a whole lot of fun.

PAX East 2015!

The first weekend in March was PAX East in Boston, Massachusetts. We missed 2014 and weren’t planning on going this year (since tickets & hotel are so hard to get) but our friend Roger managed to snag Friday and Saturday passes for all three of us and another friend of ours, Denis. You might’ve seen them in such things as Animal Crossing & Saints Row costumes with us. I managed to get a room close to the con center once he told us about the passes and suddenly we were going to PAX East!

I want to apologize, first off, for the photos I have in this post. I didn’t bring my camera so all of these photos were from my phone. Last time we went up to PAX East, we drove – this time we flew up so we tried to not take a lot of luggage. Which also meant no costumes. 🙁

Just because I didn’t have my camera and we didn’t have any costumes didn’t mean we didn’t have fun though! We saw a ridiculous amount of interesting looking games and are very excited about a lot of the ones we saw and got to try out. At the bottom of this post will be a list of our favorites, why we loved them, and links to more information about them!

PAX East 2015! PAX East 2015! PAX East 2015!
Amplitude! Rock Band 4! Hard Rock party!

One of the highlights of the weekend besides all the games we got to see was the Harmonix party at the Hard Rock Cafe. Actually I should change that highlight to just Harmonix in general. They had the latest build of Amplitude at their booth, they had just announced Rock Band 4 and they threw a kickass party at the Hard Rock Cafe on Saturday night. It was a definite treat to see all the HMX people we met at Pax East 2013 again. In fact, you might remember from the PAX East 2013 con report where we talked about how we met HMX artist Jamie McKiernan while wearing our Dance Central 3 Glitterati costumes – we saw her at the party and talked to her about all kinds of ridiculous things. Seriously, that company is full of talented and extremely kind people. Everyone at the booth was pumped about Amplitude, excited about Rock Band 4 and their Hard Rock Cafe party was sold out — they had an AMAZING con this year.

PAX East 2015!

The other highlight was stumbling across a booth for a game called Enter the Gungeon, by Dodge Roll Games (and published by Devolver Digital, who we always trust). I was drawn to the fact that it looked like it was ridiculously fun to play and holy my goodness everything is adorable in the best and most badass way. As I was leaning over to grab one of the business cards so I could look into it more later I heard someone say my name – now, I knew Nate, Denis and Roger were to my right so when I looked to my left to see where my name had come from I was met with a face I hadn’t seen in at least a decade. Apparently, one of the developers of Dodge Roll Games is an old high school friend of mine. I flipped out, naturally. He was a grade below me and I was standing there explaining all of this to Nate and Roger (Denis also went to the same high school and kind of remembered him) and repeating, “OMG PRECIOUS DAVID CHILD LOOK AT HIM I’M SO PROUD.” That’s what I was saying also when I was taking that picture up there: “I GOTTA GET A PICTURE OF HIM SO I CAN TWEET TO SHOW THE REST OF THE HIGH SCHOOL PEOPLE LOOK AT DAVID ALL GROWN UP. LOOK AT HIM EXPLAINING THE GAME.” So besides Enter the Gungeon looking like complete crazy fun, I got to see an old friend too!

But really, I’m not kidding, keep an eye out for this game.

So with that, here are five games we had a blast playing/seeing/experiencing – we picked five to ramble about but there are more. We are so pumped about so many of these. There is a ton of talent out there.

1.) Enter the Gungeon (Dodge Roll Games) – SELF-EXPLANATORY IF YOU READ THE PREVIOUS PARAGRAPHS. 😀

PAX East 2015!

2.) Monsters & Monocles (Retro Dreamer) – The four of us went back to this game three times. If you like co-op games (in the vein of Castle Crashers – 4 player kick-everything’s-ass kind of co-op!) then you will like game. We’re always looking for 4 player co-op games that we can all play in the same room and we are so excited for this one. The sprites are extremely badass and cute at the same time (I always picked the robot when I could okay) and the weapons were the right balance of useful, crazy and funny (Crumpet Cannon ftw) and there’s a great sense of humor about it. The tagline on the website is, “A tale of comrades, ballistics, and high tea.” –and there’s A ZEPPELIN. COME ON. I need this game yesterday.

3.) Homesick (Lucky Pause) – I have always had an extremely soft spot for point-and-click games (Myst, Phantasmagoria, Shivers, etc.) and you know how I love creepy games – not necessarily jump scare types, but the ones that really get to you and have an absolute slow burn about them. Homesick looks like something I am prepared to fall in love with. I’m preparing myself for massive amounts of feels. This game looks so pretty and so unsettling (and I mean that in the best way – I love games like this) and I cannot wait to dive into it and see what the whole story is with it.

4.) Tumblestone (The Quantum Astrophysicists Guild) – I will admit, I was ready to pass this off as “another puzzle game” until I was called over by one of my pals to play it. All four of us ended up playing on one screen against each other and had an absolute blast. You might think there’s no other way a puzzle game can be done, or “that sounds too easy”, maybe “that’ll get old fast” — whatever you’re thinking, Tumblestone deserves a shot. ESPECIALLY with three friends. It’s fast-paced, clever and the game description even says you’ll always pull a “just one more round” — this is true. We wanted to keep playing but there were people waiting so we had to tear ourselves away from it.

5.) Z’Isle (Miscellaneum Studios) – I know some of you are worn out on zombies and that’s understandable/cool/whatever but I was intrigued completely by this game. They had just started building it – we were told this when we ran into a bug while playing. This was no big deal though, for having just started what we saw was impressive. The game is based off a comic book series set in Montreal seven years after a zombie apocalypse. One of the main things that pulled me over there was the weapon one of the people at the booth was holding. It was made out of bike parts and it looked effing cool as hell. The picture I snapped with my phone came out like utter crap so here is a picture off of Z’Isle’s Facebook page. Give them a like and check it out. I got the first issue of the comic while I was there and it’s a great read!

PAX East 2015!

Also, check out these games we don’t have room to ramble about!:

  • Dog Sled Saga (a very darling game where you, a new-to-the scene musher, puts together and takes care of your own little set of sled dogs)
  • Albert & Otto (a very smart and very engaging game where you play a boy who takes his magical bunny with him on a journey – Nate played this for such a long time, we didn’t realize how long we were there!)
  • Dead Years (an open-world survival story with action RPG elements and A DOG! <3)
  • Never Ending Night (THIS GAME LOOKS SO PRETTY oh yeah also it’s “a 2D side-scrolling, physics-based exploration game”)
  • Kwaan (i am sobbing over how cute and perfect everything in this online adventure game is LOOK AT IT)
  • Dead Secret (A MURDER MYSTERY :D!)

PAX East 2015!

Overall, even without my camera and any costumes, PAX East was a blast. And to close this post out, here is a picture of video game YouTuber Markiplier (and the guy whose fault it is that we like Five Nights at Freddy’s so much) who was at his table meeting fans and someone left him hanging when he tried to shake their hand. He just stood there and looked at them. How could you leave Markiplier hanging people, he’s always so supportive of you. 😉

We don’t know when we’ll be at a PAX convention next, but one day we’d like to go back again!

Awesome Con 2014 [CON] https://neonshores.net/2014/05/01/awesome-con-2014-con/ Thu, 01 May 2014 20:22:58 +0000 https://neonshores.net/?p=748 Awesome Con

April 19th through the 21st was the second year of AwesomeCon in Washington D.C.! Nate and I couldn’t make it last year but we heard only good things so we wanted to make sure we went this year. We were very happy we did. Despite some growing pains here and there, the convention definitely had more good going for it than bad. I’ll point out some I saw of both categories.

The bad I experienced didn’t consist of much except for a couple of big things, which were actually explained after the convention. When we arrived, the line was wrapped around the building for people who had already purchased tickets. The convention center is huge and Nate and I wandered to the back and got in line. Normally I wouldn’t be that excited to stand in line but this was actually pretty neat because it was here I noticed all of the families that had come out for the convention.

Awesome Con

Later we learned that many of the attendees on Saturday heard about AwesomeCon because of the coverage they were getting in the local media thanks to their World Record Attempt on Friday. Those people bought their tickets Friday night and the attendance on Awesome ConSaturday was much higher than they expected. This was a great thing for the convention – maybe not for all the people in line but we only waited in it for an hour. I’ve waited four hours in line for a badge at Dragon*Con (before they fixed the system) so I was okay. Also, as I mentioned previously, I had entertainment! Seeing all the people in line that were in costume or with their families made me smile. Especially when there were families in costumes like these two as Link & Zelda from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Their smiles were absolutely contagious!

The other thing that fell into the bad category also had to be because of the level of attendees the convention had on Saturday. The Dealer/Exhibitor area was packed. The aisles in there and the Artist Alley section were very wide, which was great, but there were still a ton of people everywhere. I hope to see them spread out and use more of the convention center space next year.

With all that out of the way though, I can get to the good. The diversity of the programming here was wonderful, the Artist Alley was amazing and everyone I ran into on the Brute Squad (aka AwesomeCon’s set of volunteers) was extremely helpful and nice. Saturday morning after we got into the convention we looked around the exhibit hall for a bit before heading to the Star Wars Discussion panel. It was moderated by our friend Bria of White Hot Room and besides supporting her, we wanted to see what the panel had to say about theAwesome Con new Star Wars movies. After milling around the exhibit hall some more – and eating expensive convention center lunch (which was actually delicious, albeit expensive) – we got in line to meet Melissa McBride, who plays Carol on AMC’s The Walking Dead. She was absolutely fabulous and very sweet and spent time talking to each group that went up to her instead of just signing something, smiling, and moving on. I also found out she hates touching cash just as much as I do and she gave me some of the hand sanitizer from her table (MY HERO <3).

We were dressed as Rick O’Connell and Evelyn Carnahan from The Mummy that day and gushed anytime someone gushed about The Mummy to us. It was great seeing that people still love that movie – it’s definitely one of our favorites. Although, Nate also got a couple “Nathan Drake!”‘s and even better were the, “It’s Mal Reynolds!” We joked later about how we should’ve brought, “This is The Mummy & The Mummy Returns and This Is Why You Should Watch Them” pamphlets. (Naturally, with a tiny note on the bottom that reads. Third movie? What third movie?)

Sunday was a shorter day for us – we rode the Metro into the city and had no problem getting in the convention since we already had our 2 day passes. There was a lot of milling around in the exhibit hall again (so much to look at!) and also a trip or two around the video game room. We watched costumers as Anna, Elsa, and Kristoff from Frozen play Just Dance 2014, and then we watched another group go up and start a song. More people sort of fell in behind them and we realized we were sitting down by a giant dance party. The game room was set up very well (this is a big deal for me because you know how I love video games). There was a lot of room for spectators and people to walk by around the tables and they left a huge space for the Kinect and Just Dance.

Awesome Con

We went to a panel about 3D Printing and Cosplay and were pleasantly surprised to see the two people running it that we had seen showing a 3D printer at Eastern Shore Fan Con! The panel was very well run and I loved the fact that they went through the whole process from the beginning – the modeling whatever object you’re going to print – to the end – the actual printing. It was nice that they passed around some of the items they made as well so everyone could get a feel for what the 3D printer and a little elbow grease could produce. The panel was run by Sox Cosplay and Props and Bindi Smalls – both of whom were also very informative and friendly.

Awesome Con

Overall, the convention was a lot of fun and with it being a short Metro ride away from us, we’ll definitely make it a point to be back. Working out the space issues and line issues should be no big deal so we hope to see AwesomeCon expand and grow into the giant convention Washington D.C. needs!

Basically: Awesome job, AwesomeCon.

PAX East 2013 [CON] https://neonshores.net/2013/04/04/con-report-pax-east-2013/ Thu, 04 Apr 2013 04:48:17 +0000 https://neonshores.net/?p=647 We actually did stuff at this convention besides chill around in costume & nap in the hotel room – actually, no, let me rephrase that. We didn’t go to panels or anything because we were too busy in awe at the expo hall and too busy goofing off with new friends. We didn’t make it to any panels at all and this is still one of our favorite cons ever – we met some awesome people including some of our favorite game makers/developers, got some sweeeeeet swaaaaag, made some amazing new pals and spent some time in the PC Free Play MASSIVE OH MY GOD LOOK AT ALL THE COMPUTERS.

PAX East 2013 PAX East 2013

I’m sorry in advance for all the rambling about to come your way, dear reader. I still can’t wrap my head around PAX East. I wish it could’ve gone on forever. This post will include some highlights as well as costume photos! There aren’t as many costumers there as say… Katsucon or Dragon*Con, but there were a fair amount and every single one we saw was incredible. Right off the bat on Friday morning, I saw this Barret (Final Fantasy VII) in his Cargo-Ship-Trip-to-Junon sailor uniform and I squealed. Y’all know how much I love Barret, but BARRET IN HIS STOLEN SAILOR WHITES CURSING UP A STORM is even better!

Barret Wallace!
YESSSSSS!

We checked out the expo hall Friday morning before getting into our first costume and danced on the Dance Central 3 stage (cause we knew we wouldn’t be able to do it in any of our costumes). We danced to “You’re A Jerk” and the Kinect just flat out lost me near the end of the song cause Nate is such a giant and took over the stage. Gosh, Nate, I will forever be in your shadow (XD).

After that (and after getting our awesome DC freebies for dancing! <3), we got into our costumes from The Cave – The Creepy Twins! We have a special place in our heart for creepy twins (hello Glitterati and now hello Luteces) so when we played The Cave, we knew this costume had to happen even though our heights are so wrong. We dropped by the Double Fine booth in them (I needed to stop by anyways because I needed this print so so so so so so bad :3) and were extremely grateful and humbled at how much they loved the costumes! I was getting a Double Fine Kickstarter print signed by Tim Schafer for my brother-in-law and he cackled at the costumes and took a couple of photos (we were both all, “HUR HUR HRUHREUHRURH THANKS HURRRR HIIIIII THANKS” — seriously, we don’t know how to interact with people ever).

The Cave The Cave

(Thanks to Tim Schafer for the above photos!)

The Cave The Cave

(Thanks to Erin for the above photos!)

We checked out more of the expo hall and then changed into Matt Miller and Kinzie Kensington (Saints Row: The Third) costumes! WE HAD TO SEE THE SAINTS ROW IV PREVIEW. I cannot stress enough how excited we are because (I know this isn’t a popular opinion) but we both loved the ridiculousness of Saints Row: The Third even after playing the first two and we were both glad to see they’re raising the BAR OF RIDICULOUSNESS. We were planning on bringing Matt & Kinzie costumes no matter what, but once the Saints Row Twitter started saying that SR costumers would be able to skip the line, we slammed those babies into the suitcase so fast– okay, I take that back. The Matt jacket can’t fit into a suitcase because it is huge and can’t fold. So we put that beside the suitcase.

Matt Miller & Kinzie Kensington - Saints Row: The Third
Thanks to the Saints Row Twitter for this photo!

We talked to the Deep Silver employee letting people into the theater and he was extremely cool and excited for us to see the preview. He also snapped the shot to the left and sent it to the people taking care of the Saints Row Twitter – they were posting photos of costumers all weekend. (I wish we saw them all in person!) I also poked around and asked if that person in the SR4 promo shot with the gang-colored lipstick was, in fact, Matt Miller, and I got a lot of, “HEEEHEHEHEEEHEHE, YOU’LL JUST HAVE TO WAIT”s, which I took as a very good sign.

The preview– I can’t even– OH MAN. Everything about it was ridiculous and as I said, we are fans of that. The DUBSTEP GUN looks like it will provide all sorts of entertainment and an interview we saw later from PAX East claiming we might sort of be going into the internal baggage of these characters in this game really makes me wish it was August already. ALIENS, SUPERPOWERS, DUBSTEP GUNS, PERSONAL BAGGAGE AHOY! For real, is it August yet?

While scoping the Dance Central stage, we met up with a darling friend Miscellaneon who I know from the worldwide interwebbs (thanks to Dance Central!) and as we stood there and nerded out, I saw a person up on stage dressed in Mo’s alternate outfit from the first Dance Central game. I waited until he was done dancing and stopped him for a photo which turned into all of us meeting the next morning for Dance Central costume shenanigans (which I will get to in a bit)!

The rest of Friday was spent loafing around. We went to the PC Free Play area and played the campaign in Left 4 Dead 2 that we hadn’t played yet (Cold Stream) – we ended up not beating it before our time was up that night, b’awww.

Saturday was mostly spent hanging out at the Dance Central 3 booth because we are nerds for that, okay. We – and by we I mean our new friend Chris as Mo, Miscellaneon as Taye, Nate and I in our new Glitterati outfits, and Denis as Glitch with the amazing light-up Boomy he made – creeped on the booth a little after noon and met all the super nice Harmonix employees who were there (my goodness they were so polite and funny and a joy to be around I can’t get over it sjdkfjaskfd). One of Harmonix’s community managers, Annette, told us we were free to hang out at the booth so we did! We also cheered for people dancing (well, Nate and I golf clapped because the Glitterati are mean, y’all) and talked to other fans about the game. It was a lot of fun and it got even better when a Lil’ T costumer (a fabulous girl by the name of Daniela) came up! We had three full crews! Another hurrah moment was when Annette said Nate and I were the perfect height for the Glitterati – even though Jaryn also looks like a giant in the game, Kerith is a frickin’ monster and she said this is what it would look like in real life. I AM STILL EXTREMELY GRATEFUL FOR THAT COMMENT because our height difference of roughly a foot works so well for costumes like Luke Triton and Professor Layton but it always worried me with other costumes – especially the Glitterati. SO THANK YOU, ANNETTE! XD

Dance Central 3
Thanks to Harmonix/Dance Central for this photo!

The other highlight in these outfits was when we wandered off to take some photos…

Dance Central 3 Dance Central 3 - The Glitterati
Hi-Def & Flash4wrd – happy to see you! The Glitterati – not happy to see you!

Dance Central 3
Let’s pretend all the crews like each other for one photo!

That last group shot was taken by someone who had a certain attachment to our outfits! We were about to ask someone hanging around where we taking photos if they could take a quick group shot of all six of us, but we were suddenly approached by a girl in a Dance Central shirt. Now, this was a shirt only Harmonix employees have, so we were all admiring it because we will never have one: “HI YOUR SHIRT IS AMAZING HUR HUR” (you know, how we usually sound) – she pointed to our Glitterati outfits and said, “I designed those!” She said the same of Daniela’s Lil’ T outfit and pointed to other bits and bobs on everyone’s outfits too! Turns out it was Jamie McKiernan – an artist from Harmonix! She said she was one floor up, spotted us from above, and rushed downstairs to get a photo! She took a couple with my camera as well, which we are very thankful for! I ALSO THANKED HER PROFUSELY FOR GIVING JARYN A FABULOUS BUTT CAPE BECAUSE I. LOVE. BUTT. CAPES. Seriously, there is a post sitting in the drafts of this blog right now about how much I love butt capes. The extra bonus moment of me rolling around on the ground crying in my head came when she said she thought she saw us online before and asked if we were the two who did the Glitterati costumes with the glowing logos on the backs of the crew outfits – Nate and I were both extremely honored that she liked the DC3 outfits we made as well as the crew ones (WEEKEND MADE ;-;) and it was so awesome to meet her AKA THE PERSON BEHIND THESE FABULOUSLY INSANE OUTFITS.

Dance Central 3 - The Glitterati
Forever sobbing because Sonja makes it look like we know what we’re doing!

Those photos are a perfect transition into the next part of our day because it was taken by our BRO OF BROS Sonja of Soulfire Photography (I can’t count the number of reasons we love this girl, for real) who is always a joy to work with because you can’t not smile when you’re around her. She also puts up with my stupid made-up words and random costume problems I always seem to have! She was talking to Sheila and Sylar of Aicosu when we met up with her and it was really cool to meet them cause their costumes are always wonderful and look just as amazing in person (they were wearing their Dishonored costumes which looked perfect). Also, they’re both positively kind and funny which is THE BEST COMBO. We bugged Sonja and annoyed her camera for a bit with all this Lisa Frank bling then we hobbled back up to the room to de-shine ourselves!

We got back into normal clothes (and shoes, hahahahahah) after that and wandered around some more. Expo hall, dinner with Chris & Miscellaneon at the food court, Dance Central free play area (Miscellaneon & Daniela danced Nicki Minaj’s “Massive Attack” with us and it was so much fun AGGH I MISS EVERYONE), PC free play area (played L4D2 – Cold Stream again, BEAT IT THIS TIME, AW YES) – it was all pretty much a giant blur of THIS IS SO COOL I LOVE EVERYONE AT THIS CONVENTION.

Sunday we saw a tweet on the magical land of Twitter about a Saints Row cosplay gathering in the con center lobby at 12:30 so we packed up everything and threw on the last minute Saints Row IV costumes we put together after this fabulous image was released the week before the con! I collected things for Kinzie that week and Nate had everything for Presi-Boss (Bossident?)! We went down to the Deep Silver booth and watched the trailer once because we were in Saints Row costumes again, then headed up to the gathering. We were really glad we did because everyone there was just like all the other people we had met over the weekend: AWESOME. XD I’m sorry, I know I’ve been overusing that word but I just can’t use it enough here, haha.

Everyone at the gathering was really nice and we had a lot of fun goofing off with in-character photo ideas (JOHNNY GAT GET ON THE GROUND AND BE DEAD) – it was a really entertaining time! Plus, we made a group trek to the Deep Silver booth and got to watch the preview all together! Thanks to the Saints Row Twitter for these photos!

PAX East 2013We changed after that and meandered around the expo hall some more before piling into the car and driving back home. I said this on Twitter (a shorter version of it, though): I know there are some bad apples in the gaming community (as there are in every community) but I met so many polite, funny and marvelous people here – it made me love video games even more. We had a blast at PAX East 2013 and can’t wait to do it again!

In closing, here is a magnificent statue of one of the cat security guards from Battleblock Theater at The Behemoth booth (and me derping behind it)!

Eastern Shore Fan Con 2013 [CON] https://neonshores.net/2013/03/11/eastern-shore-fan-con-2013/ Mon, 11 Mar 2013 01:21:01 +0000 https://neonshores.net/?p=613 This past weekend Nate and I went to Eastern Shore Fan Con with our friends Bria (of White Hot Room) and Denis (many thanks to them for taking photos at the con like the one in this entry)! ESFC is a con that just turned two years old and will definitely only get bigger – it was a blast! The staff was incredibly sweet as were all the attendees we had the pleasure of talking to and seeing around the con.

We weren’t sure what costumes to bring along with us so we ended up putting together one of the ones that have been on our planned costumes list for a few months now! We added it to our list when we saw Wreck-It Ralph in theaters and with the movie coming out last week on Blu-Ray/DVD (and watching it again, of course!) we thought maybe it was time to finally put together our costumes of George & Meg from Paperman.

Paperman - George & Meg

We bought the pieces we didn’t have from the thrift store the Thursday night before the con and Nate folded paper airplanes up the Saturday morning of the con. Denis helped him attach them to the jacket in the car on the way over (thanks, bro! XD). It was a last minute costume (and we will be fixing up a couple of things before bringing these to T-MODE next month since we didn’t have time before this weekend!) but people at the con really seemed to enjoy it (thanks to anyone who did! <3) and we had a lot of fun wearing them! We love Paperman so much and we were both really excited it won the Oscar for best animated short so that made this costume even dearer to our dorky little hearts. 🙂

We’re currently finishing up costumes for PAX East – which isn’t this coming weekend, BUT THE NEXT (fsjkdjfakj where did the time go!) – so we’ll be putting up a costume schedule post for that con soon as well as some costume preview shots (hopefully, haha).
